six months next preceding the election, shall, on the first Mon-
day in March in each year, at such house as shall be directed by
the burgess and commissioners, elect a burgess and assistant
burgess and five commissioners for said town, who have resided
therein for six months next preceding the election.

32. All elections shall be held and conducted as shall from time
to time be directed by the by-laws of the corporation, not con-
trary to the provisions of this charter.

33. If, during the year for which they were elected, the bur-
gess, assistant burgess, or any of the commissioners shall die,
resign, remove from said town, or become non compos, or dis-
placed, an election to fill the vacancy shall be held, at which all
persons, qualified to vote at a general election, may vote.

34. The burgess and commissioners, or a majority of them,
may meet from time to time, as often as occasion may require,
upon the business of the town, and not less than once in every
three months.

35. The assistant burgess, in the absence of the burgess, shall
preside at all meetings of the municipality, and, when the bur-
•gess is present, shall have the same power as one of the com-
missioners.

36. The said burgess and commissioners, or a majority of
them, may appoint a clerk, and prescribe his duties, and may
allow him such compensation for his services as they may think
proper.

37. The clerk shall enter all ordinances passed by the burgeSB
and commissioners in a book, to be kept by him for that purpose;

the said ordinances shall be open at all times for the inspection
of any person interested, and copies of all ordinances shall be
put up in the most public places in said town.

38. The said burgess and commissioners may make all such
by-laws, regulations and ordinances as they may deem expedient
for the comfort, health, convenience and prosperity of the said
town, for the prevention of nuisances, preservation of health, and
suppression of vice and immorality therein.
