shall receive such compensation for their services as the said
board shall determine.
182. Whenever any vacancy shall occur in the board of school
commissioners, it shall be the duty of the said board to imme-
diately notify the judges of the Orphans' Court thereof, who
shall fill the same at their first meeting thereafter.
183. The treasurer of the said board shall give bond, approved
by the said board, to the State of Maryland, in such amount as
the said board may determine, conditioned for the proper dis-
bursement of all moneys that may be intrusted to him, and for the
faithful performance of such other duties as may be prescribed
and required of him by the said board ; and the amount of the
said bond shall never be less than ten thousand dollars.
184. The said board of commissioners of public schools shall
meet quarterly, or oftener if necessary, at such times and places
as may be agreed upon; it shall require a majority of the entire
board to constitute a quorum for the transaction of any business
involving the expenditure of any money, the election of officers
and teachers, a change in the manner of governing schools, the
appointment or removal of officers and teachers, and the adop-
tion or rejection of books; other business, such as the reception
of ordinary reports, returns from the schools, applications and
papers to be filed, or any other matter less important, may be
transacted with a less number.
185. The board of school commissioners shall have the charge
and supervision of the schools of said county, may establish the
number of school districts, and organize schools in numerical
order whenever the same may be necessary; contract for build-
ing and furniture for the schools, for books, stationery and all
other necessary supplies for the same; which said books and
stationery shall be paid for by the pupils, their parents or
guardians, or shall be free of charge in the discretion of said
board; they shall provide for the examination of teachers, and
appoint and remove them at their discretion, and shall super-
intend generally and particularly all interests and operations of
schools in their charge; but nothing herein contained shall pre-
vent the said board from appointing one or more persons in any
election or school district, to be denominated trustees, or by
whatsoever name they may be called by the said board, to assist
them in the discharge of their duties, who shall be liable to
