794 ST. MARY'S COUNTY. [ART. 18.

aoDB recommended by a board of trustees, as teachers in any of
the school districts in said county; and they may appoint a
person or persons qualified to examine applicants for teaching;

and if the board shall be satisfied, after due examination has
been made, that the applicant is a person of good moral cha-
racter, and possessed of sufficient learning, and otherwise quali-
fied for teaching, they shall give him a certificate of qualification,
which shall be annually presented for renewal, and shall be re-
newed, unless some valid objection be offered by the trustees of
the district in which he may be employed.

117. The school commissioners shall each be entitled to a per
diem of two dollars for every day of actual session, to be paid
by the treasurer of the school fund; but they shall not receive
compensation for more than ten days in any one year; and they
may allow their secretary such compensation as they may think
proper, not exceeding twenty dollars per annum.

SHERIFF.

118. The sheriff of said county shall be entitled to forty cents
a day for keeping in jail and boarding each prisoner.

119. He shall be entitled to eight, per cent. upon all officers'
fees collected by him.

WITNESSES.

120. Each witness summoned to testify in the courts of said
county shall be entitled to one dollar for each day's attendance.
