726 PBINOE GEORGE'S COUNTY. [ART. 16.

George's county or Anne Arundel county; one-half to the use
of the informer and the other half to the use of the State.

MESSENGER.

74. The messenger to the Circuit Court and Orphans' Court
for said county, shall receive an annual salary of fifty dollars.

NAVIGATION or PATUXENT RIVER.

75. All weirs and hedges in the western branch of Patuxent
River below the bridge, where the road leading from Upper
Marlborough to the town of Queen Anne crosses the said branch,
are declared nuisances, and may be abated as such by any
person.

76. If any free person shall place or make any weir or hedge
in the said west branch of the Patuxent River, contrary to the
provisions of the preceding section, he shall forfeit the sum of
twenty-five dollars for each offence, to be recovered before any
justice of the peace, one-half to the informer or person who may
sue for the same, and the other half to be paid to the justice,
and by him paid annually to the county commissioners for said
county.

77. If any free person shall fish any such weir or hedge, he
shall for every offence forfeit the sum of fifteen dollars, to be re-
covered and applied as directed in the preceding section.

78. If any slave, without the direction of his master or over-
seer, shall commit either of the offences mentioned in the two
preceding sections, he shall for every offence, by the judgment
of a justice of the peace, be punished with whipping, not ex-
ceeding twenty lashes; but the master of such slave, or any
other person, may redeem such slave from said punishment by
paying the fine that would have been imposed if such slave had
been free.

NEGROES AND SLAVES.

79. No licensed retailer in aaid county, nor any person residing
in said county, accustomed to make and sell distilled spirits or
other liquors, shall suffer any free negro or any negro slave to
be in his store-house or other house wherein he is accustomed to
sell distilled spirits or other liquors, between sunset and sunrise.
