694 MONTGOMERY COUNTY. [ART. 15.

18. Upon complaint and due proof made by the overseer to
any one trustee of the alms-house, that any person in said alms-
house hath behaved in a disorderly manner, or hath refused or
neglected to obey any of the rules and by-laws of said corpora-
tion, he may order such moderate and proper correction, not
exceeding fifteen lashes for any one offence, to be given to such
offender as the nature of the ease may require.

19. Any of the trustees may, in writing, direct what poor
shall be received into said alms-house.

20. Any justice of the peace for the said county, or any person
by him authorized, may apprehend or cause to be apprehended
and committed to said work-house,' any vagrants, vagabonds,
beggars, and other idle, dissolute and disorderly persons found
loitering or residing in said county, who follow no labor, trade
or occupation, and have no visible means of subsistence, there
to be kept at hard labor for any time not exceeding three
months. '

21. If any person shall sell or dispose of any strong liquor, or
other matter or thing to, or purchase any thing from, any in-
mate of said alms-house, he shall forfeit the sum of twenty-five
dollars.

22. All sheriffs, constables, and other officers shall aid and
assist the said trustees, and the officers by them employed, in
the discharge of their respective duties.

23. If any person shall be sued or prosecuted for any thing by
him done in pursuance of this law, or any thing therein contained,
he may plead the general issue, and give the special matter in
evidence for his defence, and if verdict be given for him, or the
plaintiff be non suit or discontinue, he shall recover treble costs,
and if the plaintiff be unable to satisfy them, the attorney who
brought the suit shall pay them, unless the plaintiff shall give
security for the costs approved by the court.

24*. Each trustee of the alms-house of Montgomery county
shall be entitled to three dollars a day for each day he shall at-
tend to the duties of his office, and five cents for every mile he
shall necessarily travel from his place of residence to their place
of meeting, but no mileage in returning.'
