610 HARFORD COUNTY. [ART. 12.

one offence, to be given such offender, as the nature of the case
may require.

17. Any justice of the peace, or any person by him authorized
and appointed, may apprehend, or cause to be apprehended and
committed to said alms-house, any vagrants, vagabonds, beggars,
and other idle, dissolute and disorderly persons found loitering
or residing in said county, who follow no trade or occupation,
and have no visible means of subsistence, there to be kept at
hard labor for any time not exceeding three months, and the
overseer shall receive the person so committed.

18. If any person shall sell or dispose of any strong liquor or
other thing to, or purchase any thing whatsoever from, any in-
mate of said alms-house, he shall for every offence forfeit and
pay the sum of twenty-five dollars.

19. All sheriffs, constables, and other officers shall aid and
assist the said commissioners in the performance of their duties
as trustees, and all officers by them appointed.

20. If any person shall be sued or prosecuted for any matter
or thing by him done in pursuance of this law, he may plead
the general issue and give the special matter in evidence; and
if upon trial a verdict shall pass for the defendant, or the
plaintiff be non-suit or discontinue, the defendant shall receive
treble costs, and if the plaintiff be unable to satisfy the same,
they shall be paid by the attorney who brought the suit, unless
the plaintiff shall give security for the costs, to be approved by
the court.

BAILIFFS.

21. The bailiffs of the Circuit Court for Harford county shall
each receive a per diem of one dollar and fifty cents for each
day they shall attend said court.

22. The collectors of the different election districts shall pay
to the said bailiffs, immediately upon the termination of every
court, such sum of money as they shall severally be entitled to
receive for such attendance, and a certificate signed by the clerk
of the Circuit Court, expressing the number of days any bailiff
may have attended said court, and the sum due him, shall be
sufficient authority to the collectors to pay the amount therein
specified.
