SHERIFF.
139. The sheriff of Charles county shall furnish all State
prisoners confined in jail suitable bed and bedding, shall have
their clothes regularly washed, and furnish fire when necessary
to keep them comfortable.
140. The sheriff shall be allowed a sum not exceeding fifty
cents a day for each State prisoner confined in jail; but when
fire-wood and blankets shall be levied for by the county com-
missioners at the instance of the sheriff, the sheriff shall not be
allowed more than forty cents a day for each prisoner.
SURVEYOR.
141. The surveyor of Charles, county shall be entitled to four
dollars a day for each day he may be engaged in the discharge
of his duty as surveyor, either under warrants or orders from
any court or in private surveys, and five cents a mile for every
mile travelled from his house to the line to be surveyed, and re-
turning thereto.
142. The said surveyor shall also be entitled to four dollars for
each plat furnished by him; Provided, he be not employed more
than six hours in making said plat, and for any time longer than
six hours employed thereon he shall be entitled to a pro rata
allowance.
TAXES.
148. The collectors of tax in Charles county may, after thirty
days' notice by public advertisement, set up at the court house of
the county and at four of the most public places in said county
of the time and place of sale, sell at public sale a sufficient
quantity of timber growing on the land suitable for cord wood
or fence rails, to satisfy-and pay all taxes due on lands belonging
to persons who do not reside in said county.
144. The collector shall give a certificate to the purchaser of
such timber, of such sale, stating the quantity and quality of the
timber sold, and shall also make a return thereof to the county
commissioners of said county, to be recorded in their office, and
the purchaser may at any time within twelve months from the
day of sale enter upon the lands and cut and carry away the
quantity of timber purchased.
