limits of said village; who, before he shall proceed to the execu-
tion of his office, shall take an oath, to be administered by a
justice of the peace for said county, that he will faithfully and
impartially perform the duties required of him as bailiff, within
the limits of said village, according to the best of his skill and
judgment; and the said bailiff shall give bond in the same man-
ner and under the same penalties that the several constables of
the said county do; and it shall be the duty of the said bailiff
to attend the meetings of the said commissioners, whenever he
shall be requested; to perform such services as shall from time
to time be by them directed; to prevent the tumultuous and
irregular meetings of slaves or free negroes within the limits of
said village; to punish with moderate correction all such slaves
and free negroes as shall be found wandering or strolling' about
the streets in the night, and to prevent slaves frequenting the
houses of other persons in said village without the consent of
their master; and the said duties shall be performed by the said
bailiff, subject to the control of the commissioners.

86. No person shall permit his swine to ran at large within
said village, and the bailiff, upon the information of any person,
or upon his own view, shall forthwith seize all gwine found at
large therein, and unless the owner shall redeem the same by
paying to the bailiff the sum of one dollar for every swine
seized, for his trouble, the bailiff shall, after two days' notice set
up at the court-house door, sell such swine at public sale, the
one-half of the proceeds to go to the bailiff, and the other half
to be paid by him to the trustees of the primary school of the
district in which said village is situated.

87. No person shall keep or raise any swine in sties, pens, or
other enclosures within the said town, or within a quarter of a
mile thereof, and the bailiff of said town, upon information that
any person has any swine confined in a sty, pen, or other enclo-
sure within said village, or within a quarter of a mile thereof,
shall give notice to such person to remove such pen, sty, or en-
closure, and upon failing to do so within ten days after such no-
tice, the person so failing shall forfeit the sum of ten dollars, to
be recovered in the name of the State, before a justice of the
peace, one-half to the informer and the other half to the primary
school of the district.

88. If a bailiff shall fail to perform any of the duties required
of him in the two preceding sections, be shall forfeit the sum of
