30 ALLEGANY COUNTY. [ART. 1.

raw materials, and it shall be his duty diligently to inquire
whether the said individual, association, or corporation be in-
debted as aforesaid, and if the employees or furnishers of raw
materials shall in any way suffer, be prejudiced or injured by
refusal to comply with, or negligence in executing the require-
ments hereof, the sheriff or coroner, together with his sureties,
shall be bound and held liable for whatever of injury or damage
shall be done in the premises, in consequence of such refusal or
negligence.

OKPHAKS' COURT.

104. The judges of the Orphans' Court of Allegany county
shall be allowed a per diem of two dollars, and at the rate of
twelve and a half cents per mile for every mile they shall travel,
coming from their places of residence to Cumberland, but such
itinerant charges shall only be computed once for each term.

105. The Register of Wills of said county, at each meeting of
the court, shall make a memorandum on the minutes of the
court of the number of miles travelled by each judge, and the
county commissioners shall levy therefor accordingly.

106. The county commissioners shall annually levy a suffi-
cient sum to enable the collectors to pay the per diem and mile-
age of judges of the Orphans' Court, upon the passage of their
accounts by the county commissioners.

NATIONAL BOAD.

107. The Governor, by and with the advice and consent of
the Senate, shall biennially appoint a superintendent of that
part of the national road lying within the State of Maryland,
who shall, during his continuance in office, reside in Allegany
county, and who shall have the care and control of said road,
and shall receive a salary of five hundred dollars per annum, to
be paid out of the tolls of the road.

108. The person so appointed shall, before entering upon the
duties of his office, and annually thereafter, give bond to the
State of Maryland, with such security as shall be approved by
the judge of the Circuit Court for Allegany county, in the sum
of four thousand dollars, with the following condition, or to the
following effect: " Now the condition of the above obligatipn is
such, that if the above bound --- shall well and faithfully
