the parties or by competent testimony, that the wood to be
reviewed remains entire as passed by the corder.

562. The inspector and corder from whose" decision the appeal
is made, shall be responsible to the party appealing for the sum
of twenty cents for each and every cord that the persons who
try the appeal shall determine to be of deficiency or excess as
the case may be, to be recovered by summons in the name of the
party aggrieved, before a justice of the peace, in the same manner
as other small debts are recovered; Provided, that if the deficiency
or excess shall, in the opinion of said parties, have proceeded from
error of ^dgment in the inspector or corder, then, upon their
certifying the same under their hands to the mayor, the party
aggrieved shall have no right to recover from the inspector and
corder any thing more than the costs of appeal.
563. The persons trying the appeal shall make return to the
mayor of their decision, and shall be entitled to receive fifty
cents each for their services.
564. The inspectors and corders of firewood shall be entitled
to demand and receive six and a quarter cents for each cord of
firewood inspected and corded by them, to be paid by the party
at whose request the service was performed.
565. No license shall authorize any inspector or corder of fire-
wood, to act as such without the limits of the city.
' 566. Any person not having a license, who shall act as
inspector and corder of firewood, or who, having a license, shall
act as such inspector without the limits of the city, shall forfeit
and pay to the sheriff of the city the sum of three hundred
dollars; said penalty to be imposed as a fine by the Criminal
Court on presentment or indictment by the grand jury and con-
viction in due course of law; and one-third of the penalty shall
be paid by the sheriff to the informer, and the residue shall be
accounted for by the sheriff to the Treasurer as other fines.
JAIL.
567. The mayor and city council have power to provide by
ordinance, for the appointment of visitors or other superin-
tendents of the jail of said city.
