212 CITY OF BALTIMORE. [ART. 4.

309. All barrels and tierces which shall be made and used for
the purpose of packing or containing packed fish, shall be made
of sound, well seasoned oak, ash, chestnut, pine or cypress staves,
free from flaws or worm holes, of light timber not less than half
an inch thick, with headings of the. same kinds of wood not less
than five-eighths of an inch thick and sound and well seasoned;

the heading to be well planed or shaved, the barrels and tierces
to be well hooped with at least three hoops on each bilge and
three hoops on each chine, all of sufficient substance; the barrel
staves twenty-eight inches in length, the heads seventeen inches
between the chines, the barrels or tierces to be twenty inches
across the bilge and to hold twenty-eight gallons; and the
barrels, half barrels and tierces shall be made in a good and work-
manlike manner, so as to hold pickle; the tierces shall contain
not less than forty-five gallons, and the half barrels not less than
fifteen gallons; Provided, that all barrels, half barrels or tierces
made or used for the purpose of packing or containing pickled
shad shall be made of white oak, pine or cypress, and shall have
at least four hoops on the chine and three on the bilge; And pro-
vided also, that nothing contained in this law shall apply to fish
in kegs of less than ten gallons.

310. The inspectors may require any casks to be filled up by
the owner or owners, and by him or them re-packed or re-pickled,
and in all respects, completed in such manner as they shall direct,
for the purpose of having the same made fit for exportation; any
owner or person by him employed refusing or neglecting to
comply herewith shall forfeit and pay five • dollars for each
offence.

311. If any herrings or other fish hereby required to be in-
spected shall on examination thereof by the inspector prove to
.be falsely packed, that is to say, the fish in one part of the cask
of different or inferior quality from the other, or packed with any
improper or unfit substances, with intent to defraud, the owner
or agent shall forfeit and pay for each cask the sum of five
dollars.

812. N6 pickled fish shall be exported from this State in casks
by water, unless the master or owner of the vessel shall produce
to the collector or other officer authorized by the United States
to clear out vessels, a certificate from the inspector in chief or
one of the sub-inspectors that the same has been inspected,
marked and branded according to law.
