184 CITY OF BALTIMORE. [ART. 4.

176. At such special sessions of said court, all cases may be
tried and disposed of as at the regular terms thereof.

177. All commitments and recognizances for all felonies,
crimes, offences and misdemeanors committed within said city,
shall be returned from time to time by any justice of the peace
taking the same before said court, and shall be lodged with the
clerk of said court on the day next preceding the day appointed
for holding the said court.

178. The. said court shall have concurrent jurisdiction with the
Superior Court of Baltimore city, in all cases of controversies
between masters, servants, and including petitions for freedom.

179. The justices of the peace for Baltimore city, whenever
they shall commit any person for want of bail, for trial, on
charges of assault and battery, for keeping a disorderly house,
or for violation of article .fifty-six of the code, and for any other
small offences for which no greater punishment than fine and
imprisonment can be imposed, shall endorse on said commit-
ments the names and places of residence of the witnesses, who
shall have appeared before them on behalf of the prosecution, and
shall recognize said witnesses to appear before said court on the
next Saturday thereafter.

180. The warden of Baltimore city jail shall, on receiving said
commitment, enter the names and places of residence of said
witnesses on his docket, and shall, on demand, give a copy thereof
to the accused, together with a copy of the commitment.

181. The said warden shall bring before the Criminal Court
every person who may be committed to jail for want of bail for
any of the offences mentioned in section 179 of this article, on
the Saturday next succeeding his or her commitment; and if the
said person shall think proper to waive his or her right to a trial
by jury, and have his or her cause heard and determined in a
summary way, the said court shall hear and determine the same,
and the same shall be proceeded with in the same manner, and
to the same legal effect, as if submitted on presentment or in-
dictment by the grand jury.

182. The said warden shall file with the clerk of said court the
original commitment, or a copy thereof, on the day preceding
the trial.
