city, with power to make all necessary regulations respecting
the same.

189. Every carriage, coach, or other vehicle moved by horses
or other animal power which shall be used for the conveyance
of persons within the city of Baltimore for hire or compensation,
shall be deemed a hackney carriage.

140. Every owner of a hackney carriage who shall have ob-
tained a license therefor as required by the ordinances of the
mayor and city council, shall be authorized and entitled, during
the time in such license specified, to ask, charge and receive as a
compensation from every person using the same, the rates of fare
and compensation and hire, and no more, as prescribed in the
next succeeding sections.

141. From any steam boat landing or rail road depot to any
hotel or private residence within the limits of the city, for a sin-
gle passenger, fifty cents; if two or more, each thirty-seven and
a half cents; and for each trunk, box, or bag of sufficient size to
be strapped on, twelve and a half cents; no charge for. small par-
cels put in the carriage; to any steam boat or rail road depot,
the same fare and charge'for baggage, with an addition of fifty
cents for the carriage only when sent for from the stable; within
the following limits, assuming Calve-rt street as the centre of the
city and extending east to Canal street, west to Green street,
south to Great Montgomery street and north to Biddle street, for
a single passenger, thirty-seven and a half cents; if two or more,
each twenty-five cents; if beyond the limits and anywhere within
the city boundary, twelve and a half cents additional for each
passenger; for the use of a hackney carriage by the hour, one
dollar; at the same rate for all fractions of an hour, but no
charge for any time less than a quarter of an hour; evening and
night charges : for hacks taken from the stand to any part of the
city, as follows : from the first of May to the 30th of September,
inclusive, after 8 o'clock p. M., seventy-five cents for a single pas-
senger; if more than one, fifty cents each; a like sum for return-
ing; from the first of October to the 30th of April, after seven
o'clock p. M., the same; no charge for baggage.

142. From south Gay street to any part of Fell's Point not
further east than Washington street, twenty-five cents, and
twenty-five cents back for each passenger; all which shall be
subject to the following general rules: 1. An additional allow-
