tificate of the number of days they have respectively attended,
upon the production of which certificate the Comptroller shall
draw his warrant on the Treasurer for the amount appearing
thereby to be due.

CIRCUIT COURTS FOR THE COUNTIES.

44. The Circuit Courts for the several counties are the highest
common law courts of record and original jurisdiction within
this State, and each has full common law powers and jurisdiction
in all civil and criminal cases within its county, (except where
by law the jurisdiction has been taken away or conferred upon
another tribunal,) and all the additional powers and jurisdiction
given by the Constitution and by law.

45. Each of the circuit judges may make orders at common
law at any place in his circuit, to take effect in any part of his
circuit, and may require in writing the original papers in any
case, or abstracts and transcripts, to be produced before him
wherever he may be in his circuit.

RELIEF TO SHERIFFS AND COLLECTORS.

46. On application by petition in writing to the several Circuit
Courts or circuit judges, or the Superior Court of Baltimore city,
of any sheriff, or collector of the county and State taxes, or
either of them, who has failed or neglected to collect any taxes
or fees within the time prescribed by law, the court or judge
may, on such terms as they may prescribe, by an order, extend
the time of such sheriff or collector to complete his collections,
which extension may be limited in the discretion of the court or
judge, and may be renewed as may be deemed reasonable; and
the said petition and orders shall be filed in the office of the
clerk of the Circuit Court or Superior Court where such appli-
cation is made.

47. The courts and judges aforesaid may grant the relief and
extension provided in the preceding section, in favor of sheriffs
and collectors, to the securities, executors, administrators or
trustees of sheriffs and collectors, who may respectively succeed
to their rights and duties.

48. The said courts and judges may in their discretion require
the party applying for such relief to serve notice on the Comp-
