Said bill was then sent to the Senate.

On motion of Mr. Smith, of Baltimore city,

The House resolved itself into a Committee of the Whole,
to consider

The bill entitled an Act to add a new Article to the Code
of Public General Laws, to be entitled Public Education,
providing a general system of Free Public Schools for the
State of Maryland, and to repeal all laws inconsistent there-
withj with pending amendment.

Mr. Brown in the Chair.

After some time spent in Committee of the Whole,

The committee rose,

(The Speaker resumed the Chair,)

And through Mr. Brown, Chairman, reported that they
had had under consideration

The bill entitled an Act to add a new Article to the Code
of Public General Laws, to be entitled Public Education,
providing a general system of Free Public Schools for the
State of Maryland, and to repeal all laws inconsistent there-
with, with pending amendment,

Had made some progress thereon,

Reported the same back to the House without amendment,
and asked to be discharged from the further consideration of
the same.

The report was received and the committee discharged.

The question then recurring upon the second reading of
the bill,
