In every civilized land its history has been marked
by sympathy for the oppressed, pity for the poor,
and commiseration for the suffering. Never has
this been more strikingly manifested than in the
devotion, energy and sacrifices that have charac-
terized the operations of the Ladies' Southern
Relief Association of Maryland, in ministering
to the wants and necessities of our brethren of
the South. Their contributions, gathered from
all parts of our own and other States, (not pass-
ing by the offerings of children,) have fallen
like the dew of heaven upon all, without respect
to sex, age or creed. Therefore,

Preamble.
|
Resolved, That the thanks and warmest com-
mendations of the General Assembly of Maryland
are due, and are hereby sincerely tendered to Mrs,
Benjamin C. Howard, President " Ladies' Southern
Relief Association" of Maryland, and the ladies
composing said association, for the timely aid
afforded to the suffering in the Southern States,
and for the efforts still making in behalf of that
portion of our afflicted land.

thanks.

Resolved, That a copy of the above preamble
and resolution be appropriately engrossed, signed
by the Speaker of the House of Delegates, the Pre-
sident of the Senate and the Governor of Mary-
land, and by him transmitted to the President of
the "Ladies' Southern Relief Association."
