COMPTROLLER'S OFFICE,

Annapolis, March 13th, 1868.
Hon. Barnes Compton,

President of the Senate:

SIR—1 have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of the
following order, to-wit:

"Ordered, That the Comptroller furnish to the Senate the
following information:

" 1st. What amount has been paid for bounties since the
1st of October, 1867, to the 1st of March, 1868; to whom
said bounties were paid, with the amount paid to each per-
son or attorney, and residence of such attorney. Also,
whether said bounties were paid for white or black soldiers,
and whether the amount of bounties so paid to blacks were
slaves or free men at the time of their enlistments, if such
information is in his office.

"2d. What amount of bounty claims are now registered
in his office for payment, and by whom, and what provision,
if any, has been made for their payment."

In reply to the above, I submit the following statement :

The total amount of bounties paid between the 1st of Octo-
ber, 1867, and the 1st of March, 1868, is $236,195.

Of which sum there was paid—

To 225 white volunteers and drafted men...............$52,200
76 former owners of enlisted slaves.................. 7,600
21 naval enlistments........................... ........ 6,300
624 colored slave volunteers............................ 46,900
491 free colored volunteers..............................123,195

Total..............................................$236,195

And for whom payments were made to the following par-
ties, to-wit:

John L. Sears, do..................... 2,000
Gen. E. B. Tyler, do..................... 1,475
Lister & Supplee, do..................... 5,275
David Fowler, do..................... 100
