182 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 29,

Also, the following communication of Hon. Robert Fowler,
State Treasurer:

TREASURER'S OFFICE,

ANNAPOLIS, January 29, 1868.
Gentlemen of the Senate

and House of Delegates :

The committee appointed by the joint action of your Hon-
orable Bodies to inform me officially of my re-election as
Treasurer of Maryland, performed that duty, by handing me
the enclosed complimentary note, which I desire shall he
read to your Honorable Bodies.

ANNAPOLIS, January 24, 1868.
Hon. Robert Fowler :

SIR:—We, the undersigned, have been appointed a com-
mittee upon the part of the Legislature to officially notify
you of your election as Treasurer of the State of Maryland
for the term of two years from and after the day of your
qualification.

It must be gratifying to you to again receive this evidence
of the confidence of the people of your State. The able manner
in which you have conducted the financial affairs of the State
in a time of great monetary depression has especially com-
mended you to the confidence of the people.

Permit us to express the wish that your future manage-
ment of the Treasury may be as successful as the past has
been.

We are, with great respect,

Your fellow citizens,

JAS. C. CLARKE,

ALFRED SPATES,

JAS. T. EARLE,

F. DORSEY HERBERT,

S. BOYER,

JOHN N. CONWAY,

EPHM. ALBAUGH,

To the Honorable Committee, collectively and individually,
I tender my grateful acknowledgments for the kind allusions
they have made relative to my past official acts, and there is
no good reason why my usefulness as one of your fiscal
agents should not improve rather than diminish. I am not,
gentlemen, unmindful of the great honor you have given me
in again fully endorsing me, after having held this respon-
sible office so long, but will only add that f will do the best
I can to assure you that the confidence you have entrusted to
me shall not be abused.
