Mr. Denson presented the memorial of the Board of Man-
agers of the Maryland Institute.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Educa-
tion.

Mr. Smith presented two petitions of sundry citizens of
Dorchester county, praying the continuance in force of the
present school system till July 15, 1868.

Which were read and referred to the Committee on Educa-
tion.

Mr Clarke presented the petition of citizens of Baltimore

and Carroll counties for permission to make a turnpike

road.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Corpo-
rations.

On motion by Mr. Lee,

The following message was sent to the House of Delegates:

BY THE SENATE,

January 23, 1868.
Gentlemen of the House of Delegates :

With the concurrence of your Honorable Body we propose
that the report of the Superintendent of Labor and Agri-
culture be referred to a joint committee of the two Houses, to
consist of five members of the Senate and seven of the House
of Delegates, with instructions to report a hill for the or-,
ganization of the Department of Labor and Agriculture, and
have appointed on the part of the Senate Messrs. Lee, Ham-
mond, Hyland, Walsh and Denson.

AUGUSTUS GASSAWAY,

Secretary.
On motion by Mr. Hammond, it was

Ordered, That the Secretary of the Senate be authorized to
furnish to the Committee Clerks such articles as they need
to perform their duties.

Mr. Earle presented the memorial of citizens of Queen
Anne's county in regard to public schools.

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Educa-
tion.

On motion by Mr. Earle,

Leave was granted to Senators Earle, Hyland and Clarke
to report an Act to repeal part of the first section of an Act
entitled an Act entitled an Act to carry into effect the eighth
section of the Act entitled an Act for the promotion of
internal improvements, passed at December session, 1835,
chapter 395, passed at January session, 1860, chapter 303.
