CHAPTER 172.
AM ACT making Appropriations for the benefit of the American Colo-
nization Society.
|
|
Preamble.
|
WHEREAS, the people and government of this state have wit-
nessed with deep interest the exertions of the American Coloni-
zation Society, to promote and carry into effect the great and
landable objects of their association : And whereas this legisla-
ture do most highly approve of the scheme of African coloniza-
tion, set on foot by said society, and believe it to be the only
one which can promise practical benefit to the country, or to
that class of the community which it is intended to relieve ;
therefore,

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the treasurer of the western shore be, and he is hereby
authorized and directed, to pay to the order of the treasurer of
the American Colonization Society, for the use of said society,
the sum of one thousand dollars, out of any unappropriated
moneys which shall be in the treasury at the time of the pas-

sage of this act ; Provided, that the treasurer of the said shore
shall be satisfied that the said sum will be expended for the
benefit of free people of colour who have been actual residents
of this state for twelve months previous to the time of their em-
barkation.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the said treasurer is hereby
authorized to pay to the order of the treasurer of the society
aforesaid, the sum of one thousand dollars for the use of said
society, in the month of January in the year eighteen hundred
and twenty-eight, and the like sum at the same time in each

successive year thereafter ; Provided, that after the present year
no payment shall be made under the authority of this act, unless
the officers of said society shall present satisfactory proof to the
said treasurer of the western shore, that the whole of the appro-
priation of the preceding year, or such parts thereof as may
have been expended, has been applied towards the colonization,
on the coast of Africa, of free people of colour, who had been
actual residents of this state for twelve months preceding the
time of their embarkation; And provided further, that the ap-
propriation shall be extended to the applicants for colonization
from each of the counties, and the city of Baltimore, in the ratio
of applications.
CHAPTER 173.
AN ACT to repeal the eleventh section of an Act, entitled, a further
supplement to the Act, entitled, an Act to regulate the Inspection of
Tobacco.
