BALTIMORE CITY.

issuing of licenses to traders and keepers of ordinaries, passed
December session, eighteen hundred and twenty-seven, chap-
ter one hundred and seventeen, and the several supplements
thereto, and for any other small offences for which no greater
punishment than fine and imprisonment can be imposed, to
endorse on said commitments the names and places of residence
of the witnesses who shall have appeared before them on behalf
of the prosecution, and to recognize said witnesses to appear
before Baltimore city court on the next Saturday thereafter,
and it shall be the duty of the warden of Baltimore city and
county jail, on receiving the same, to enter the names and
places of residence of said witnesses on his docket, and on de-
mand, to give a copy thereof to the accused, together with a
copy of commitment.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of the
warden of the jail of Baltimore city and county, to bring before
one of the judges of Baltimore city court, every person who
may be committed to said jail for want of bail for any of the
offences aforesaid, on the Saturday next succeeding his or her

commitment, and if the said person shall think proper to waive
his or her right to a trial by jury, and have his or her cause
heard and determined in a summary way, it shall be the duty
of the judges of Baltimore city court, or any one of them to
hear and determine the same ; and the same shall be proceeded
on in the same manner and to the same legal effect as if it had
been submitted on presentment or indictment found by the
grand jury, save only that in all such cases the clerk of said
court shall tax only half the legal charges established by law
in cases of indictment found by a grand jury, and that all cases
of presentment for violation of the act to regulate the issuing of
licenses to traders and keepers of ordinaries, passed December
session, eighteen hundred and twenty-seven, chapter one hun-
dred and seventeen, and the several supplements thereto, at
the election of the party presented, may be tried upon said
presentment, and be chargeable only with half the legal cost
aforesaid.

SEC. 4. And be it enacted, That the said warden of Balti-
more city and county jail shall file with the said clerk the
original commitment or a copy thereof on the day preceding
the trial.

SEC. 5. And be it enacted, That the act, entitled, an act for
the more speedy trial of misdemeanors in the city of Baltimore,
passed December session, eighteen hundred and thirty-five,
chapter seventy-five, be and same is hereby repealed.
