SHERIFFS.

control ; and the said trustees, on being satisfied that the said
child or children so subscribed have been sent to school, and
received instruction as aforesaid, shall at the end of every quar-
ter, pay to the teacher of such child or children, and take his
receipt for the same, which said receipt shall be a proper
voucher for the president of the said board in his settlement
with the levy court, which is hereby required to be made
with the said court at their first meeting in May annually.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That all such parts of the acts of
assembly relating to the said fund as may be inconsistent with
the provisions of this act, shall be, and the same are hereby
repealed.

SHERIFFS.
AN ACT for the benefit of the Sheriff of Washington County —1831, ch. 47.

Repeal.

WHEREAS, it has been represented to this general assembly,
by the petition of Christian Newcotnef, sheriff of Washington
county, and others, that the sum now allowed by law to the
sheriff for the keeping of prisoners committed to the jail of
said county, is insufficient to furnish such persons with such
provisions and other necessaries as humanity requires that
they should be provided with; therefore,

Preamble.

Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
in lieu of the sum now allowed by law to the sheriff of Wash-
ington county, for keeping prisoners in the jail of said county,
he shall be entitled to receive the sum of twenty-five cents
per day, for each and every prisoner which may be conftned
therein.

AN ACT to increase the allowance to the Sheriff of Washington County
for keeping Debtors in Jail.— 1837, ch. 294.

Allowed
25 cents
per day.

Be it enacted, by the General Assembly qf Maryland, That
from and after the passage of this act, it shall and may be law-
ful for the sheriff of Washington county to ask, demand and
receive one dollar and seventy-five cents per week for each
and every debtor committed to the jail of Washington county,
for the time they may remain in said jail, to be paid according
to the provisions of an act, entitled, an act to provide for the
support and maintenance of debtors already confined in prison,
passed at December session, eighteen hundred and twenty,
chapter one hundred eighty-six.
