POOR.

caught in the waters of Little Choptank or Hudson river or
the creeks thereof, in Dorchester county.
SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That any person or persons
violating any one of the sections of this act, shall be liable to
a penalty of not less than ten nor more than fifty dollars, to
be recovered before any justice of the peace in Dorchester
county, one-half of which said penalty, thus discretionally to
be imposed by said justice, shall be for the use of the in-
former, and the other half for the use of the state.

AN ACT for the relief of the Poor in the Counties of Dorchester and
Somerset —1785, ch. 57.
WHEREAS, the necessity, number and continual increase of
the poor within the said counties, is very great and burthen-
some, which might be gieatly lessened by a due regulation and
employment of them ; therefore,
SEC. 2. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That there shall be alms and work-houses erected and built in
Dorchester and Somerset counties, at convenient places in the
said counties, at the general charge and expense of the said
counties.
The residue of this section authorized an assessment restricted as to
its duration.
SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That for the time being the
several persons heieafter named be and are hereby appoint-
ed trustees of the poor within the said counties, and are em-
powered, with full and sufficient authority, to discharge the
several offices, duties and trusts leposed in and required of
them by this act; that is to say, for Dorchester county,
Messieurs Henry Hooper, Robert Harrison, Joseph Ennalls,
Joseph Daffin, Nathaniel Manning, James Steele and Robert
Giiffith: and for Somerset county, Messieurs John Adams,
Levin Gale, Thomas Bruff, John Wilson, George Waggaman,
George Day Scott and William Strawbridge ; the which per-
sons, or the major pat t of them, in case of the death or absence
of any, are hereby required, with all convenient speed, to meet
at such place within the said counties as to them shall seem
meet, to qualify themselves for the office of trustees for the poor
of their county, which they are to do by taking and subscrib-
ing the several oaths (or affirmations) appointed by law to be
taken to the government, and subscribing a declaration of their
belief in the Christian religion, and also taking the oath, viz.
'I, A. B. do swear, or affirm, that I will duly and faithfully dis-
charge the duties and trusts committed (o me as a trustee for
the poor of ———— , by an act of the general assembly, entitled,
an act for the relief of the poor in Dorchester and Somerset
