Wears and
hedges
erected so
as to stop
vessels,
declared
nuisances

SEC. L Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That all wears and hedges already made, or heieafter to be
made, in and across the said river, from the Chimney landing
to the North-west folk bridge, so as to stop up the passage of
boats, vessels or scows, shall be deemed, and are hereby de-
elated nuisances, and may be by any person taken out of said
North-west foik branch of the said river, and destroyed as
such.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That no person or persons shall,
after the fust da> of March next, put, place or make, any wear
or hedge in and across the branch of said livci, bo as to stop
the passage of boats, vessels or scows, under the penalty or
twenty doliais cut rent money for each and eveiy such offence,
to be recoveied befote a single magistiate in the same manner
as small debts are recovered, and appropriated, one-half to the
informer or person who will sue for or prosecute to effect for
the same, the other half to the use of Dorchester county, any
law to the contrary 'notwithstanding.

AN ACT for the protection of Oysters in the Little Choptank or Hudson
River and its Creeks, in Dorchester County — 1835, ch 216

Preamble.

WHEREAS, it has been repiesented to this general assembly,
that a most destructive practice is prevalent of catching oysters
in the waters of Little Choptank or Hudson river and its
cieeks, in Dorchester county, solely for the purpose of manu-
ing land, and the destruction of the oysters will be inevitable
in said river and its creeks, unless the same be prohibited by
law ; therefore,

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That from and after the fifteenth day of April next, it shall be
unlawful for any person or persons to catch any oysters in the
Little Choptank or Hudson river, in Dorchester county, or in
any of the creeks of said river, in said county, for the purpose
of manuring land.

SEC 2. And be it enacted, That from and after the fifteenth
day of April next, it shall be deemed unlawful for any person
or persons, in Dorchester county, or for any other person or
persons whatsoever, to purchase any oysters for the purpose of
manuring land, from any person or persons, which said oysters
have been caught in the Little Choptank or Hudson river or
the creeks thereof, in Dorchester county ; Provided, that the
person or persons purchasing the same be acquainted with the
fact that the said oysters, so as aforesaid purchased, were
