labour in repairing said public roads; Provided, that it shalf
not be lawful for such supervisor to call on any such free
negroes to do more than one day's work in any one year.

SJEC. 14. And be it enacted. That if any free negro or
mulatto, called on by a~ supervisor, in virtue of this act, shall
refuse or neglect to attend at the time and place appointed bj
such supervisor, or attending, shall refuse or neglect to -per-
form the duties, being reasonable, enjoined on him by such
supervisor, without reasonable excuse, such free negro or
mulatto so neglecting or refusing, shall pay a fine, not exceed-
ing sixty cents, to be recovered at the instance of such super-
visor, in the name of the state, before a justice of the peace, and
to be appropriated by the said supervisor in the same manner
as is directed by the fifth section of this act in case of delinquent
taxables.

SEC. 15. And be it endcted, That from and after the first
Monday in April next, all and every act or acts of assembly,
and every clause and section thereof, which are repugnant to,
or inconsistent with the provisions of this act, be, and the same
are hereby repealed.

Repeal.

WHEREAS, supervisors of the public roads in Caroline
county, are often ignorant of the laws under which they act,
for want of having them to refer to, and consequently commit
many errors and deviations from the express provisions of
law ; therefore,

Preamble.
|
SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That it shall and may be lawful for the levy court of Caroline
county, and they are hereby directed and required as often as
may be necessary fo cause as many copies of the act, to which
this is a supplement, and of this act, to be printed together and
stitched in pamphlet form, as may be necessary to give to each
of the present supervisors a copy thereof; and to levy the
expense thereof on the assessable property of the county.

Authority

distribute
the law.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That it shall be the duty of each
supervisor, and they and each of them are hereby directed and
required, that at all times hereafter when they or any of them,
shall return their road warrants to the levy court, or be discon-
tinued as supervisors by said court, to return with the warrant
the laws which have been put into hid or their hands under the
provisions of this act, to be placed by the said court into the
lands of such new supervisors as may be appointed in his or
their stead. And in case any of the said supervisors shalf
neglect or refuse to return those laws, as is herein before
