CAROLINE COUNTY.

 

are hereby respectively directed and required, from and after
the first day of June next, to bold, either by themselves or
their deputies, their respective offices, in the town of Denton
for Caroline county, and at the court-house, or within one
quarter of a mile thereof, in each of the other respective coun-
ties herein named, and that they or their deputies respectively,
shall, at all times, Sundays excepted, be obliged to attend at
their respective offices for the transaction of such business as
appertains to their several offices, and if the said clerks, regis-
ters of wills or sheriffs, any or either of them, shall refuse or
neglect to comply with the provisions of this act, each of them,
so refusing or neglecting, shall forfeit and pay the sum of fif-
teen pounds current money for each month either of them
shall so refuse or neglect to comply with the said provisions,
to be recovered by indictment before the justices of the respec-
tive county courts, collected as other fines are, and applied to
the use of the said counties respectively ; Provided always,
that nothing in this act contained shall in any manner be con-
strued to authorize the registers of wills in the aforesaid coun-
ties to transact any part of the business of their respective
offices by deputies, which is now prohibited by the existing
laws of this state.

COMMISSIONERS OF TAX.
AN ACT to abolish the Board of Commissioners of Tax in Caroline
County, and to vest their powers and duties in the Levy Court of said
County.— 1838, ch.134.
For their compensation, see 1834, ch. 208, title 'Jurors,' post.

Preamble

WHEREAS, it is represented to the general assembly of
Maryland, that the interests of the citizens of Caroline county
will be promoted, the business of the county condensed and
simplified, and a reduction of taxes effected, by abolishing the
board of commissioners of tax, and transferring all the powers
and duties now exercised by said board, to the levy court of
said county ; therefore,

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the board of commissioners of tax, heretofore existing in
Caroline county, be and the same is hereby abolished, and

that hereafter, all the powers and duties of the said board are
vested in, and shall be exercised and performed by the levy
court of said county.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted. That all laws relative to the
powers, duties and conduct of the board of commissioners of
tax for Caroline county, shall be and they are hereby, in all
respects, construed to extend to the levy court of said county.
