AN ACT relating to the Police of the City of Baltimore. — 1830, ch. 144.

 

Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the mayor and city council of Baltimore, be and they are hereby
authorized and empowered, to make and pass such ordinances
as they may deem necessary and proper, to suppress the evil
and pernicious practice of firing and discharging crackers
within the limits of said city, either by prohibiting the sale of
crackers, or otherwise.

BALTIMORE CITY GUARDS.

AN ACT for the establishment and Regulation of the Baltimore City
Guards.— -1835, ch. 14.

 

WHEREAS, it has been deemed necessary and expedient to
establish a military corps within the city of Baltimore, for the
special purpose of acting in aid of the civil authorities of that
city on all proper occasions, in the maintenance of peace and
good order within the limits of said city, and to that end a bri-
gade has been formed under the name of the Baltimore City
Guards, to consist of twelve companies, one from each of the
several wards of that city ; therefore,

Preamble.

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the Baltimore City Guards be, and they are hereby esta-
blished as a military corps, for the purpose above mentioned,
and that they be and they are hereby declared to be exempt
from all other military duty than that which is provided for by
this act.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That said corps shall be a brigade
consisting of two regiments, four battalions, and twelve compa-
nies, as now organized ; that the first regiment shall consist of
the six companies of the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and
sixth wards of the city of Baltimore ; and the second regiment
of the companies of the seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh
and twelfth wards thereof; the companies of the first, second
and third wards, forming the first battalion of the first regi-
ment ; the companies of the fourth, fifth and sixth wards, form-
ing the second battalion of the first regiment; the companies
of the seventh, eighth and ninth wards, forming the first bat-
talion of the second regiment; and the companies of the tenth,
eleventh and twelfth wards, forming the second battalion of the

second regiment ; and each of said companies shall consist of
not more than one hundred rank and file of members, of twenty-
one years of age and upwards.

colonel, lieutenant-colonel, and a major; and each company by
a captain, four lieutenants, four sergeants, and four corporals;
