any loan or loans which may have heretofore been obtained, or

which may hereafter be obtained, by the said mayor and city
|
|
council of Baltimore, for the purpose of prosecuting and com-
|
|
pleting the works of internal improvement now authorized by
|
|
law ; Provided however, that nothing herein contained, shall be
|

construed to extend the limits of direct taxation, except for the
|
|
special object of raising the sums aforesaid ; And provided fur-
|
|
ther, that property beyond the present limits of direct taxation,
|
|
shall be charged for the purposes aforesaid only rateably and
|
|
proportionably according to assessment, with property within
|
|
the said limits for the same purposes.

AN ACT to authorize the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore to levy
|
|
hereafter upon the Assessable Property within the City of Baltimore, a
|
|
Direct Tax, not exceeding the sum of three hundred and fifty thousand
|
|
dollars annually, with full power and authority, by ordinances, to collect
|
|
the same.— 1838, ch. 208.

Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
|

the mayor and city council of Baltimore, be, and they are
|
granted.

hereby authorized to levy, hereafter, upon the assessable pro-
|
|
perty within the city of Baltimore, by direct tax, a sum not
|
|
exceeding three hundred and fifty thousand dollars annually,
|
|
with full power and authority, by ordinances, to collect the
|
|
same, for the purpose of defraying the expenses of the corpora-
|
|
tion, over and exclusive of all expenses, charges and sums of
|
|
money, which they are, or shall be required by law, to levy
|
|
and collect for other purposes.

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assethbly of Maryland,
