sales, which shall take place under, and by virtue of such dis-
tress, shall be held to be absolutely illegal and void, any law,
custom, or usage, to the contrary notwithstanding.

 

CHAPTER 191.

 

AN ACT to repeal part of an Act, entitled,* an Act relating to Lunatic and
Insane Persons.

Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
when any person is alleged to be a lunatic or insane pauper, it
shall be the duty of the several county courts of this state, or
of Baltimore city court, as the case may be, to cause a jury of
twelve good and lawful men to be empannelled forthwith, and
to charge the said jury to inquire whether such person is insane
or lunatic, and a pauper, and if found so, it shall be the duty of

the county to which such person belongs, or to a hospital, or
some other place, better suited, in the judgment of the said
court, to the condition of such lunatic or insane person, there

CHAPTER 197.

AN ACT to provide more effectually for the levy and collection of the
tax imposed for the purpose of Colonizing the Free People of Colour
of this Slate, by the Act, entitled, an Act relating to the People of
Colour in this State, passed at December session, eighteen hundred and
thirty-one, chapter two hundred and eighty-one.

 

WHEREAS, it is represented to this general assembly, that the
tax imposed upon the assessable property within the several
counties and cities of this state, by the eighth section of an act
passed at December session, eighteen hundred and thirty-one,
chapter two hundred and eighty-one, entitled, an act relating to
the people of colour in this state, has in many instances not
even yet been levied in several of the counties, whilst in some
others it has been duly levied, collected, and paid into the trea-
sury ; therefore,

SEC. 1. Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That it shall be, and it is hereby made the absolute duty of the
levy court or commissioner of the county, as the case may be,
of the several counties of this state, and of the mayor or city
council of the city of Baltimore, to levy on the assessable pro-
perty within their several and respective counties, and the city
