PUBLIC IMPROVEMENTS

Department of Public Improvements

06.10.00.01

Established By: Md. Code Ann., art. 78A, § 17—Under Board of Public Works.

Head: Director Md. Code Ann., art. 78A, § 18.
Qualified registered engineer.

Member: Director appointed by the governor.
Term: 4 years.

Removal: By governor for official misconduct, incompetency or neglect of
duty Md. Code Ann., art. 78A, § 18.

Employees: Md. Code Ann., art. 78A, § 19. Director appoints a deputy and
other employees. The appointment of all employees, other than the
deputy director or executive secretary, shall be from the classified
service and in accordance with the merit system. The deputy
director or executive secretary shall be appointed and hold office
at the will of the director. If such an appointee is subsequently
removed to hold his position as deputy, he shall be restored to the
merit system status. 54 merit employees and 6 unclassified em-
ployees.

Function: To assist and advise the Board of Public Works and other agencies
on engineering surveys, plans, etc., and contracts for public im-
provements. Appoints architects and engineers subject to approval
of Board of Public Works. Md. Code Ann., art. 78A, §§ 21-22.

Board of Architectural Review

Established By: Md. Code Ann., art. 78A, § 23.

Head: No statutory provision.

Members: 7 members appointed by director of public improvements
from certain lists.

Term: 4 years.
Removal: No provision in statute.

Function: Director of public improvements refers all major and im-
portant architectural problems and plans concerning the
construction, etc., of State buildings. Md. Code Ann., art.
78A, § 23.

Art Commission

Established By: Board of Public Works, 1961.
