CHAPTER 379.

AN ACT to add certain additional sections to
Article twenty-six, of the Code of Public Gen-
eral Laws of this State, relating to Corporations
in order to provide for the organization of uni-
versities, colleges, hospitals and asylums.

2,1867.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That any twelve or more white
persons, citizens of the United States, and a ma-
jority of them citizens of Maryland, who may 'de-
sire to form a corporation for the purpose of or-
ganizing any university, college, or hospital, or
any asylum for charitable purposes may make,
sign and acknowledge, before some officer compe-
tent to take the acknowledgment of deeds, a cer-
tificate in writing, in which shall be stated the
corporate name of the said university, college, hos-
pital, or asylum, and the number of the trustees,
directors, or managers, who shall manage the
concerns of the said university, college, hospital,
or asylum, and the name or names of the city or
county or counties in which said university, col-
lege, hospital, or asylum, or any branch or branches
thereof may be intended to be located.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the said certifi-
cate shall be recorded in the office for the recording
of deeds of the city or county, or of the city and
county or counties, in which the said university,
college, hospital, or asylum, or any branch there-
of, may be intended to be located , and when the
said certificate shall have been so recorded, the
persons who have signed and acknowledged the
same and their successors, shall be a body politic
and corporate in fact and in name, by the name
stated in such certificate, and by that name shall
have succession.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted. That they shall, by
their corporate name, be capable in law of re-
ceiving and acquiring by grant, devise, or bequest
any real or personal property which be granted,
devised or bequeathed to said corporation for the
promotion of the purposes for which it was form-
