AN ACT to authorize the purchase or condemna-
tion of certain lands in the city of Annapolis,
and in Anne Arundel county for the public use
of the United States as part of the Naval Acad-
emy, and to cede to the United States concur-
rent jurisdiction over such lands, and to exempt
the same from taxation. |

WHEREAS, it is represented to this General As-
sembly by the Vice Admiral in command of the
Naval Academy of Annapolis, that the Govern-
ment of the United States needs at this time fur-
ther additions of territory in and near Annapolis
to the present enclosures of the Academy for the
public use as part of the Academy grounds,
and desires to purchase the same, and that it is
apprehended that the United States may not be
able to acquire said lands at this time at a fair and
just price from the owners thereof, by reason of
some of said owners being under age, feme covert,
now resident of Anne Arundel county, or non
compos mentis, or because the agents of the United
States may not be able to agree with such owners
as to the value of such property; and whereas this
General Assembly is desirous to comply with the
. request of the United States authorities, that pro-
vision should be made by law for condemning such
lands for the public use, as part of the Naval
Academy, in the event of the United States not
being able to purchase the same, and is also will-
ing to cede to the United States concurrent juris-
diction over such lands when the same shall have
been purchased or condemned as hereinafter pro-
vided; therefore, |

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That whenever the United States
shall make application to the owner of any lots or
parcel of land lying in the city of Annapolis to
the North and East of King George street in said
city, or situate in Anne Arundel county South of
the Severn river, to purchase the same for the
public use as part of the Naval Academy, and the |
