CHAPTER 44.

Passed Feb.
19, 1867.

AN ACT to provide for the payment of the officers
of Registration of the State, and their officers
and expenses.

Authority to
levy money to
pay Officers of
Registration.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly
of Maryland, That the Register of the city of Bal-
timore, and the County Commissioners of the sev-
eral counties of this State, shall cause to be levied
upon and collected from the assessable property of
the said city and counties, a sum or sums of money
sufficient to pay said officers of Registration their
per diem as allowed in the Act of eighteen hun-
dred and sixty-five, chapter one hundred and
seventy-four, with such additional sums as may be
required to pay the clerks employed by the said

officers of Registration and for office rent; pro-
vided, that no office rent be allowed where the
county buildings afforded the necessary facilities;
and provided, that the said County Commissioners
and Register of the city of Baltimore shall con-
sider that the services of the said clerics were ne-
cessary for the proper performance of the duties of
the registration officers; and further provided, that
in future registrations no clerk shall be employed
by the registers, unless the election district shall
contain five hundred or more voters.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the Register of
the city of Baltimore and the County Commis-
sioners of the several counties of this State, be
and they are hereby required to pay to each offi-
cer of registration, upon their vouchers, three dol-
lars for each and every day he may have been in
attendance as an officer of registration, registering
the voters of this State, and also shall pay such
clerks, upon vouchers furnished by the officers of
registration, of the several boards of registra-
tion, such sums as may be due them, with such
further sums as may be deemed necessary for of-
fice rent.

In force.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That this Act shall
take effect from the date of its passage.
