404 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Mar. 4,
litical mistakes, whether occuring in my own party, or that of
my opponents. As I have always announced my views fear-
lessly, and without reference to personal consequences, I
shall still, with the utmost respect for the sentiments of those
who may differ from me, continue so to do.
In conclusion, whatever political necessity, if any, was to
be accomplished by attaching disgraceful imputations to my
name, has been doubtless already achieved. Let those who
have succeeded in circulating injurious rumors with that
view or any other, decide with their own consciences whether
the end renders proper the employment of such extraordi-
nary means. The exigencies of party may possibly palliate
many political eccentricities—they can never justify wanton
and unfounded assaults upon private reputation.-
