Gross-examined by Mr. Brown.
1st. Question. What did the Judges say ?

Answer. They only said they had the law; and also a pa-
per with my n'ame on it, but would not tell me anything
about it. They offered me no oath.

2d Question. Did you apply to be registered in 1865 ?
Answer. I did not, for I thought it was no use.

PETER SPEELMAN.

Deposition No. 51.

OTHO SPIELMAN, being duly sworn, deposed and said as fol-
lows, to wit:

By Mr. Devecmon:

1st Question. What is your name, age, residence and occu-
pation ?

Answer. My name is Otho Spielinan, age 34, live in Dis-
trict No. 2, Allegany county, Maryland, and am a miller and
a farmer by occupation.

2nd Question. When did you register ?

Answer. In September, 1866, in District No. 2. as a quali-
fied voter.

3rd Question. Did you attend the election held in Allegany
county, Maryland, November 6, 1866; did you offer to vote;
was your vote accepted or refused; and whose names were on
your ticket as candidates for House of Delegates ?

Answer. I attended the said election; offered to vote, but
the Judges refused to take my vote, saying they had a charge
against me, but not telling me what it was. The names on
my ticket as candidates for House of Delegates were, Wil-
liam Devecmon, William A. Bryden, John McElfish, George
W. McCulloh and Patrick Hammil.

Cross-examined by Mr. Brown.

1st. Question. Did you apply for registration in 1865?

Answer. I did not. I took sick the last day, when I in-
tended to go, and could not go. I had no other reason—I
had nothing to da with the rebellion, for or against it. The
Register had no charges against me when I registered, and
the Judges refused my vote because there were charges lodg-
ed against me with the Registers in 1865; I don't know
what they were.
