Judges refused my vote, because I would not take the oath
and answer their questions, as I had legally registered, and
taken the oath before the Registers. The names on the ticket
as candidates for House of Delegates were, William A. Bry-
den, John McElfish, Williams Devecmon, Patrick Hammil,
and George W. McCulloh. The Judges belonged to the
Radical party—all agreed not to let me vote.

Cross-examined by Mr. Brown.

1st Question. Why did you not register in 1865 ?

Answer. Because there was no one for whom I wished to
vote.

JOHN L. BROWNING.

Deposition No. 29.

JOHN CONNEWAT, being duly sworn, deposed and said as
follows, to wit:

By Mr. Derecmon :

1st Question. What is your name, age, residence and occu-
pation ?

Answer. My name is John Conneway; age, 66; live in
District No. 10, Allegany county, Maryland; by occupation
a farmer.

2nd Question. When did you register?

Answer. In September, 1866, in District No. 10.

3d Question. Did yon attend the election held in District
No. 10, Allegany county, Maryland, November 6, 1866, did
you offer to vote; was your vote rejected or accepted; and
whose names were on your ticket as candidates for the House
of Delegates.

Answer. I attended said election; offered to vote, but the
Judges refused my vote, saying I was disloyal, and if I took
the oath I should vote—I am not disloyal. The names of the
parties on my ticket as candidates for House of Delegates
were, Wm. A. Bryden, Wm. Devecmon, George W. McCul-
lough, Patrick Hammil and John McElfish; the oath they
presented me was, I suppose, the same oath I had taken be-
fore the Register, but I declined to take it as I had taken it
once.

Cross-examined by Mr. Brown.
1st Question. Why did you not register in 1865 ?

Answer. I did not try to register; did not think they had
any right to swear me.

JOHN CONNEWAY.
