Mr. Boswell presented the following memorial:
To the Honorable Legislature of Maryland:

Your memorialist, the Trades Assembly of Maryland,
would respectfully represent to your Honorable Body that the
Trades Assembly is the' Legislative Body of the various
"Trades" of this State which have organized for the purpose
of promoting the general welfare of Capital and Labor. We
claim a dignity equal to that of any other body which is not
organized directly in pursuance of State laws, and we pre-
sent the objects of our organization as being worthy not only
oi the passive support, but equally of the active co-operation
of all bodies repreienting Capital and Intelligence. The
sound policy of every State is to improve the condition of
her citizens, and to elevate their several positions as much as
it can possibly be done by the direct agency of law. Your
Honorable Body have already, by special enactment, recog-
niaed the right of taking Labor under your protection, and
have, by solemn "Act," declared, that in all mechanical pur-
suits ten hours a day shall constitute a legal day's work.
While we feel the necessity for this protection, and acknow-
ledge our gratitude to our State for her kindly interposition
in the interests of Labor, still we do not feel that her protec-
tion has yet been extended as far to us as our necessities
require. We want eight hours a day to be declared a legal
day's work. In this State the bulk of the Mechanical inter-
