an Act to encourage and facilitate immigration to the State
of Maryland and enact other sections in the place.
Said bill being upon a second reading.

Pending which Mr. Calvert proposed the following amend-
ment:

Sec. 5. Add to end of section 5 " not to exceed five thou-
sand dollars ;

Which was adopted.

Mr. Davis, of Charles, proposed the following amendment:

Strike out 6th section.

Mr. Smith proposed the following amendment:

End of 6th section add. Provided the same shall not ex-
ceed one thousand dollars ;

Which was adopted.

The question then recurring upon the amendment proposed
by Mr. Davis, of Charles,

It was rejected.

Mr. Carmichael proposed the following amendment:

Provided that the expenses of the office of the Commissioner
of Immigration, and if all its appurtenances shall not ex-
ceed the sum of five thousand dollars ;

Which was adopted.

Mr. Neilson proposed the following amendment:

Sec. 17. That no person shall be appointed Commissioner
of Immigration, or clerk to said Commissioner, who is di-
rectly or indirectly interested in or with any company, firm,
or individual having for their object the transportation of
passengeis by land or water in the sale of public or private
lands outside of the State of Maryland ;

Which was adopted.

Mr. King proposed the following amendment:

In line two after the word " section," insert " one."

Pending the consideration of which the hour having ar-
rived for taking up the order of the day, being the bill en-
titled an Act to incorporate the Chesapeake and Lake Erie
Railroad Company:

Mr. Neilson moved to postpone the order of the day for
fifteen minutes ;

Which was not sustained.

The House then resumed the consideration of the bill en-
titled an Act to incorporate the Chesapeake and Lake Erie
Railroad Company.

Mr. Knott proposed the following amendment;
