Below I have the honor of submitting a statement showing
result of the aforesaid statement:

Nctt amount of premium paid into the Treasury,

1864 ........................................ $34,450

Nett amount interest in coin........... $24,036

Premium on same at 1 1/2 per cent........... 36,054

———— $60,090

Total.................................... $94,640

If the above statement and answers be not satisfactory I
would respectfully suggest the appointment of a "Special Com-
mittee" to investigate this subject thoroughly, to whom I
shall be most happy to afford every facility in my power.

Honorable Robert Fowler,

Treasurer of Maryland:

SIR;—I hereby certify that on the 8th day of December,
1863, I received nine thousand dollars (say $9,000) as in-
terest accrued to date on temporary deposit made with the
Assistant Treasurer of the United States at New York for
account of State of Maryland, and on the 80th April, 1864, col-
lected coupons, from United States Five-twenty bonds,
amounting to fifteen thousand and thirty-six dollars (say
$15,036), in all making twenty-four thousand and thirtynsix
dollars (say $24,036) American gold coin, with which "coin"
I was directed by you to purchase "sterling Exchange," and
remit same to Messrs. Barring, Bro. & Co., London, for
credit State of Maryland on account of interest on sterling
debt of the State, which directions were duly complied with,
as per evidences on file at this agency
