enact other provisions relative to the registration of voters in
lieu thereof, as follows :

AMENDMENT PROPOSED.

Amend by striking out all after the words "in lieu there-
of," line 6, section 1, and insert:

Section 1st. The officers of Registration in each ward of
the city of Baltimore, and each of the counties of the State,
appointed by the Governor, in the year 1866, under the pro-
visions of the 14th section of the Act of 1865, chapter 174,
are hereby continued in office for the period of four years
from the date of their appointment and until their successors
shall qualify, and any vacancies now existing in said offices,
or which may occur by death, resignation, refusal to act, or
other cause, shall be filled by the Governor. And after the
expiration of said four years, and every four years thereafter,
the Governor shall appoint one Officer of Registration for
each ward of the city of Baltimore and each Election Dis-
trict of the several counties, residents of said wards and dis-
tricts respectively, and shall fill all vacancies in said offices.
The said officers hereby continued in office and so appointed
as aforesaid, shall be styled Officers of Registration, and
shall register as qualified voters all white male persons claim-
ing and entitled to the rights of the elective franchise, in the
manner prescribed in the following sections of this Article.
The said officers shall receive for their services the sum of
three dollars for each day occupied in the discharge of their
duties, and any vacancies shall be filled by the Governor;
and all such officers before entering upon the discharge of
their duties shall take and subscribe before the Clerk of the
Superior Court of Baltimore city, and the Clerks of the aev-
eral Circuit Courts respectively, the oath prescribed in the
seventh section of the first Article of the Constitution, or the
oath prescribed for office holders in the first section of the
Act passed at the present session of the General Assembly,
entitled, an Act to restore to full citizenship and the right to
vote and hold office all persons who may be deprived thereof
by the provisions contained in the fourth section of the first
Article of the Constitution of this State, generally known as
the Enfranchising Act.

Sec. 2. The said Officers of Registration shall receive from
the Clerk of the Superior Court of Baltimore city, and the
Clerks of the several Circuit Courts, the books of registration
now in the offices of said Clerks respectively, and shall adopt
and use said books for the purpose of effecting the registra-
tion provided for in this Article; and the said Clerks shall im-
mediately upon the appointment and qualification of said of-
cers, deliver said books to them, and also duly certified co-
pies of the list of qualified voters now on record in their re-
spective offices.
