date of commission, office and residence of each, and the
number and date, and shall revise said roster annually and
correct the same; he shall make out and issue all commis-
sions and discharges directed by the Commander-in-Chief;
he shall prepare and provide the necessary rosters, books of
record, fdrms, blanks for commissions, discharges, returns,
and other papers required under this Act, at the expense of
the State, and distribute the same to the officers of the regi-
ments and companies entitled to them, upon requisition there-
for; he shall be charged with all the correspondence between
the Commander-in-Chief and officers of the several States and
Territories, the Secretary of War, the Adjutant General of
the Army of the United States, and other persons in offi-
cial stations, on the subject of military affairs, and keep a
record of such correspondence; he shall annually make a
return in triplicate of all the militia of the State, one copy
whereof he shall deliver to the Commander-in-Chief on or
before the first day ot. January; one copy shall be transmit-
ted to the Adjutant General of the United States Army on
or before the first day of February thereafter, and one copy
shall be filed in his office; he shall receive and file all returns
made to him according to law and regulation, and annually
make a detailed report thereof to the Commander-in-Chief,
and perform such other duties as may properly belong to his
office or which may be prescribed by the Military Board or
Commander-in-Chief, and to aid him in the discharge of his
duties, he shall be allowed a clerk, to be appoinied by him,
at a salary of one thousand dollars; and the said Adjutant
General shall receive the salary of two thousand dollars per
annum, payable as heretofore ;

Which was adopted.

Mr. Gorsuch proposed the following amendment:

Strikeout all after the word "take," in the first line of
sub-section 26, and insert "the oath prescribed in the seventh
section of the first Article of the Constitution ;"

Which was rejected.

The bill, as amended, was then read a second time and
ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.
