Which was read the first time and referred to the Committee
on the Judiciary.

Also, the following House bills :

A bill entitled, an Act to authorize the Governor to ap-
point an additional Justice of the Peace for the 2nd and 3rd
Election Districts respectively in Talbot county ;

Also, a bill entitled, an Act to change the name of Ellenor
Kate Purnell to Emma Catherine Purnell.

Mr. Hammond presented two petitions from sundry citi-
zens of Carroll and Howard counties, that they are suffering
great inconvenience from the removal of the Western Hay
Scales, and asking redress;

Which were read and referred to Select Committee on Hay
Scales.

Also, a petition from a very large number of citizens of
Howard county, showing that the Baltimore and Frederick
Turnpike Company are charging excessive tolls, and pray-
ing redress;

Which was read and referred to Committee on Judiciary.

Mr. Magruder presented a petition from Mary A. Suit and
others, asking to be released as securities on the Sheriff's
bond of Eli S. Baldwin, deceased ;

Which was read and referred to the Committee on Claims.
On motion of Mr. Hall,

Ordered, That the Chairman of the Committee on Claims
pay to George Pophorn twenty-five dollars, for services ren-
dered the House of Delegates in furnishing water to the
Committee Room, and for other services, to date.

On motion of Mr. Buhrman,

Ordered, That his Excellency, the Governor, be requested
to furnish this House with a copy of all the telegraphic dis-
patches and other correspondence between His Excellency
and the President of the United States, General Grant, and
General Canby, relative to the late election in this State ;
and also, all correspondence in his possession relative to the
rumored threatened interference of the United States author-
ities in the case of the Baltimore Police Commissioners.

Mr. Evans offered the following amendment:

Add at the end of the order the words, "if not, in his
judgment, incompatible with the interests of the State ;

Which was decided by yeas and nays as follow :
AFFIRMATIVE.
