MARYLAND HOSPITAL.
This well managed and faithfully attended benevolent In-
stitution, your Committee visited, and after a very thorough
examination into all its arrangements, and mode of manage-
ment, take great pleasure in stating that they are satisfied
everything possible is done for the comfort and relief of the
unfortunates within its portals. The building is kept in a
condition which elicited the warmest commendation, every
thing being neat, tidy and well managed, with great con-
sideration displayed for the relief of the patients, by other
than what may be termed strictly medical treatment. The
medical superintendent, Dr. John Fonerden is a gentleman
of great ability and large experience, having occupied his pre-
sent position for nearly a quarter of a century, and is warmly
commended by the President, visitors and other friends of the
Institution, for his untiring, indefatigable exertions in main-
taining its so long, well established and far famed reputa-
tion. In his arduous duties he is assisted by Dr. G. Lane
Taneyhill, who also labors zealously and with great accept-
ance. The other officers of the Hospital were found to be
faithful and discreet in the discharge of the several duties in-
cumbent upon the responsible positions they occupy, in en-
deavoring to ameliorate the, sad condition of those who are
deprived of the most valued faculty with which a beneficent
Providence has endowed our race. Your Committee would
recommend an appropriation of $10,000 to enable the visitors
to complete some most desirable improvements contemplated,
and which will materially contribute to the comfort of the
patients, and the improvement and preservation of the
building and grounds.
