the year 1866; if so, who furnished you said list for publica-
tion, and at what time was it furnished ?

Answer. Yes, I published all of them '. they were furnish-
ed by different parties, Charles Scott, of Mt. Savage, furn-
ished a list for District No. 12; he was officer of registra-
tion for that District. No other officer of registration furn-
ished me lists for publication; most all of them I got from
the Alleganian; and Mr. Spates furnished me with the list
of District No. 5, which I refused to publish until he furnish-
ed Mr. A Prison's signature. I published them in hand-
bills: Mr. Atkinson was not with him when he furnished
the list; Mr. Atkinson was officer of registration and correct-
ed the list. I printed the bills for Districts 7 and 8; can't
remember how I got said lists, but am satisfied I did not get
them from the officer of registration; I think Mr. Weber re-
quested me to publish them as he could not do it in time.—
The list of Mr. Scott was furnished long before time for pub-
lication; they were published at a very late hour, but not
positive that it was later than the time specified by la"w.

Interrogatory 3d. Have you in your office a file of the Civil-
ian & Telegraph for the year 1864; if so. does said file
show the publication of the findings and sentence of a Court
Martial convicting Alfred Spates, of disloyal practices against
the Government of the United States?

Excepted to by A. Spates.

Answer. I have the Civilian & Telegraph of the 16th of
June, 18(54, containing the charges and specifications, but
not the findings and sentence of a military commission in the
case referred to; and it also contains an order from the Major-
General Commanding Department, directing the arrest and
imprisonment of Mr. A. Spates in accordaaca with the sen-
tence of that Court.

Answer excepted to by A. Spates.

First-Cross Interrogatory by A. Spates. How many news-
papers were published in the year 1866, in Allegany county,
and name them, and the publishers of each; and was the list
of registered voters published in any other paper than the one
published by yourself?

Answer. Three newspapers are published in Allegauy coun-
ty; the Alleganian by W. E. Weler; the Union by the Messrs
Knorr's; the Civilian & Telegraph by myself. They were
published in the Alleganian.

Second Cross-Interrogatory by A. Spates. Where did you
reside in June 16, 1864; what was your occupation at said
time, and where were you then stationed?

Answer. My residence at that time was in Louisville, Ken-
tucky; I was in the United States army at that time; I was
somewhere in the State of Georgia and returned to Allegany
county in June, 1865.

Third Cross-Interrogatory. Were you in any way con-
