Interrog. 4. As in Schedule E. I did see them on the day
they were returned; I saw them afterward, for I made some
copies of returns for Mr. Spates; I saw them at other times,
I think I helped to make a search to see if one of the poll
books was not missing; it was not missing, it was in the
office.

Interrog. 5. as in deposition No. 15. He was absent from
the office; he was gone nearly a week, perhaps a full week,
which was between the 10th and 17th of November; I was
absent myself on the 13th and 14th, and nearly all day on
the 15th; my station is in the vault.

CHAS. F. BEAN, (Sworn.)

Interrog. 1st. as in Schedule E. Chas. F. Bean; age 20
years; occupation, deputy clerk; residence in Election District
No. 6, in Allegany county, Md., have resided here about 2
years.

Interrog. 2. as in Schedule E. I am acting as such; en-
tered in January, 1865; sworn as such on the 10th of Decem-
ber, 1866.

Interrog. 3d, as No 4, in Schedule E. I did see the poll
books of the election on the 6th of November; I put them in
the box, and took them out several times to make copies from
the poll book; no one but the deputy clerks.

Interrog. 4th. as No. 5, in deposition No. 15. The clerk,
Mr. H. Resley, was absent from Cumberland, between the
10th and 17th of November; he was absent four or five days,
and perhaps longer. CHARLES F. BEAN.

WM. DEVECMON, (Sworn.)

[nterrog. 1. as in Schedule D. Wm. Devecmon, age 23
years; occupation, lawyer; residence in Election District No-
6, in Allegany county Md.; have resided here all my life.

Interrog. 2, as No. 4, in Schedule D. I saw poll books in
the clerk's office, but do not know whether they were of this
election or not; they were on the back desk; saw some ballots;
dont know which they were, saw them in the vault; John
Fay was in the vault at the time; saw books and ballots to-
gether, when no one was in the vault.

A. M ADAMS, (Sworn.)

Interrogatory 1st as No. 1, in schedule E. A. M. Adams,
age 49 years, occupation School Teacher, residence in District
No. 6, in Allegany county, Maryland, have resided there
33 years.

Interrogatory 2d, as No. 4, in schedule E. I was called up-
on by Mr. Spates to assist in recounting the ballots of the
county. I saw the poll books and ballots, in the Vault, in
