man that was registered should vote; I do not recollect any-
thing else that he said.

6th Cross-Interrogatory, Were you realy afraid to offer
your vote, or was your fear feigned on purpose to create a
disturbance ?

Answer. I was realy afraid to offer my vote, for I be-
lieved that if I got into the polls where they could surround
me that they would mob me.

7th Cross-Interrogatory. Are you naturally a man of nerve
or a coward ?

Answer. I am not fearful.

8th Cross-Interrogatory. Name the men that were at the
polls that you were afraid of mobbing you?

Answer. Well there were a great many there, right smart
crowd, Samuel L. Wagner, Christopher Kelly, James Wil-
son, Patrick Kelly, John Carder, James Carder, Simeon
Twigg, and a number of others there that I did not know
their faces.

9th Cross-Interrogatory. What did any one of those men
say to you as a threat; who made the threat and what lan-
guage was used in making it ?

Answer. That Mr. Kelly said every dam'd man that was
registered should vote, I do not know that any pointed threat
was made toward me, I do not know that any of the others
said anything to me particularly,.

GRIFFIN TWIGG.

JAMES W. FARLOW, sworn.

Interrogatory 1st. As in schedule B.

James W. Farlow; age 51; occupation farmer; and act-
ing as constable in election District No. 7, of Allegany
county, Maryland, have resided there about 7 years.

Interrogatory 2d. As No. 2, in schedule C.

I did attend the polls on the 6th of November, 1866; I was
legally registered as far as I know; I voted the whole Union
ticket.

Interrogatory 3d. As No. 4, in schedule B.

I did not; I was there but a very few minutes.

1st Cross-Interrogatory to James W. Farlow by A. Spates,

If it had not been for Griffin Twigg, would there have
been in your opinion any excitement at the polls that day ?

Answer. I do not know; I saw nothing of it.

HENRY L. BEVANS, sworn.

Interrogatory 1st. As No. 1, in schedule E.

H. L. Bevans; age 22 years, occupation, Deputy Clerk of
Allegany county, residence election District No. 6, in Alle-
gany county, Maryland, have resided there 15 years.
