The Commission consists of the Governor, Comptroller, President
of the Maryland Agricultural College and President of the Johns
Hopkins University, who appoint a Geologist of established reputa-
tion. (Chapter 51, 1896.)

The State Geological and Economic Survey is established for the
purpose of examining the geological functions and mineral resources
of the State of Maryland with reference to their economic products,
and for the preparation of reports and maps illustrating the character
and distribution of the mineral resources. The Survey also main-
tains a Highway Division under special Acts of the General Assem-
bly. It likewise carries on work in hydrography, forestry, terrestrial
magnetism, and the mapping of the agricultural soils in co-operation
with the National Government. The most important feature of this
joint work is the preparation and publication of a topographic map of
the State on the scale of 1 mile to 1 inch.
