The said resolutions were then sent to the Senate.
Mr. Frazier submitted the following resolution:
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the
administration of the affairs of the State Department during
the four years of the rebellion, in carrying out the policy
of the government, meets the unqualified endorsement
of this body; that in embracing this occasion to express
the deep sympathy of the General Assembly, with the
Secretary of State, in the late brutal attempt upon his
life, the General Assembly hails his restoration to health and
the active duties of his station as a source of congratulation
to the people of this whole country; that the General Assem-
bly have abiding confidence in the matured ability and wise
statesmanship of the Honorable W. H. Seward, to maintain
our foreign relations with firmness and judgment, and with-
out compromise of the national honor, and that the General
Assembly awaits the development of the future, in the firm
persuasion that sooner or later no foreign" potentate or power,
in the interest of monarchical government, will be permitted
to retain a permanent footing on this continent.
Mr. Rinehart moved to lay the resolution on the table;
Pending which,
On motion of Mr, Smith, of Allegany;
The House took a recess till four o'clock.
