The House resumed the consideration of the unfinished busi-
ness of yesterday, being the bill entitled, an Act to regulate
the working of the Public Roads in the State of Maryland;
The question being on the amendment submitted by Mr.
Lusby;
It was decided in the negative.
Mr. Buhrman moved the enacting clause of the bill be'
stricken out;
Which was decided in the negative;
Mr. Roberts submitted the following amendment;
Strick out fourth section and insert " that the said county
Commissioners shall have power to appoint a supervisor for
each of said districts, into which their counties may be divid-
ed; the said appointments to be annually, and with power to
fill vacancies, and fix such compensation for their services as
they may deem proper, and shall take bond with proper and
sufficient security to the county in which the road is located,
for the faithful and diligent performance of their duty from
each supervisor;
Which was decided in the negative.
Mr. Watkins submitted the following amendment;
Section 4. Between the word "any," in the second line
and the word " road " the third line add " part of any; "
in the fifth line, between the words "said" and "road"
insert " part of said; " in fourth line, between the words
"said" and "district" add "road;"
Mr. Norris moved to amend by striking out the word
"shall" and insert " may at their discretion;"
Which was rejected.
The question being on the amendment of Mr. Watkins;
It was decided in the offirmative.
Mr. Pilkinton submited the following amendment;
In line two and also line five strike out the word "use"
and insert " improvement; "
Which was adopted.
Mr. Roberts submitted the following amendment:
That the said Supervisors shall have authority to accept
labor gratuitously offered on the roads, and shall make a re-
turn of such labor to the county Commissioners, who shall
