Mr. Fawcett submitted the following amendment:
Amend by adding a new section to come in after sec-
tion 3,
Section 4. Be it enacted. That the Supervisor in each road
district be required to make out a list of all male inhabitants
in his said district, between the ages of 20 and 50 (fifty)
years, and that the said male inhabitants be, and they are
hereby required to work one day in each year upon the pub-
lic roads, or furnish to the said Supervisor a good and ac-
ceptable substitute; and it is further made the duty of each
Supervisor to notify such number of male inhabitants as he
may require for each day he may he engaged in working the
roads of his district, until, the whole list for said district be-
comes exhausted; and in case any person so required to work
on the roads shall refuse to attend, or furnish an acceptable
substitute, it shall be the duty of the said Supervisor to no-
tify a justice of the peace, who shall immediately issue his
summons for the party to appear before him and answer said
default, 'and unless good and sufficient reason be shown,
the said party shall be fined a sum not less. than five dollars,
to be applied to the use of public roads.
The question being on the adoption of the amendment,
Mr. Fawcett demanded the yeas and nays.
